ll Sexiest Fitness Guru Whose Class Is Affordable, Kickass, And Not Yet Overcrowded -Tanya Fly The first thing you need to know about Tanya Fly, fly as she is, is that she came by the name honestly. The second is that she is here to pump you up, shape you, stretch you out, and leave you breathless on the floor in a puddle. Twenty reps become 40, and 40 deserve another five. Fly, the mother of two young boys, brings her own brand of workout. The NU Method, as she calls it, combines elements of Pilates and yoga in a one-stop class designed for women who haven't got time to play. Her first classes were in January 2005 at the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill Cooperative Preschool; she hired babysitters to watch the kids while she worked out the moms. "[Exercise is] the thing they give up first. They come have meltdowns and they don't know why—and that's why." (Laura Conaway)

I have never been a
very physical person. As a kid I didn’t really play any sports – my
parents weren’t interested and I grew up uninterested too. Then, about
a year or two ago, my mother joined the new Y in our neighborhood. She
would go off to the Nu Method, wearing the sneakers she kept from those
few tries at aerobics 20 years ago after my sister was born.
She would tell my
sisters and me how fun it was, how she felt so much better afterward,
how we had to meet the teacher, who is so great! After weeks talking
like this, she finally convinced me to go. And I was glad I did.
After the first class was over, I knew I’d be back. I felt pumped,
which is not a normal sensation for me. The next day I was sore all
over. As I kept going, I noticed little bits of my body looking
better. And it has inspired me to try and do more.
I begin with grand
ambitions: I will get to the Y an hour early and do some sort of
cardio before class. This never manages to happen, however, because no
matter how early I set my alarm, I slap the snooze button just as many
times. Eventually though, when I see that I absolutely have to get up
now to make the Nu Method, I climb out of bed.
I have a little
mantra, “It’s easier to go than not go,” and I repeat it until I get
up. This isn’t true, strictly speaking. The easiest thing to do would
be to continue lying there like a slug. But in my sleep-addled mind,
the trick works and I get up.
Once I get there,
with the music playing loud and Tanya talking, I wake up. I’m always
glad I made the effort. I don’t know which is more enjoyable, the
workout or the chats we all have. It’s kind of like that talk show, The View,
with Tanya as moderator, except all the women are usually lying on
their backs on the floor or with their bums in the air. And we have no
Elizabeth Hasslebeck, thank God.
Though I still have to trick myself to get up, each time it’s a little easier, because of how good I feel after every class.
Ellen ~ My 20-something sister-in-spirit
Hello, my name is Zipporiah Mills. I am 47, divorced, and living with 3 adult children and principal of PS 261.
I started working out using The NU Method about a year ago. Just a small group of colleagues here in the school.
The
building is our gym. We work out on the stairs and in the auditorium,
for us it is stress relief and a time to do something positive together
for us. We laugh and tease each other and rarely miss a week.
Tanya
is always telling us, and me in particular, that we need to take care
of ourselves, put ourselves first. What stood out for me during those
weekly auditorium workouts is how good I felt when it was over. I felt
like I had really accomplished something.
I decided that in July when the pressures of the school year were over I would really focus on myself.
I took personal training lessons with Tanya and began to go to the gym and in August I joined Weight Watchers. I, like so many people, have tried eating less, or even not at all, but I heard WW
helped you change your eating habits rather than make you feel like you
were being deprived. I have lost 15 lbs to date. The cardio combined
with everything else I do with Tanya has really strengthened me. I am
almost down to the size I was before I became a school administrator,
which is the goal I set for myself. Not so much because of the number
on the scale, but because for me, it symbolizes my desire not to let
the stress of my career be an excuse for not taking care of ME.
I am forever grateful to Tanya for her push, because without it, I would have never made this change.

If someone's going to bust my flabby butt, I consider it a great gift should the buster be humane enough to encouraging mental pats to said body part at regular intervals. Tanya Riley-Fly dishes out both with
humor and aplomb, coercing me into something she calls "ball bursts", while holding forth on subjects as diverse as Beyonce's love life, her late granny's philosophy of life, and the importance of squeezing one's uterus. But don't take my word for it! Ask Marcus, a fellow parent and ardent, male NU method devotee...

My mother was the first of us to take Tanya's class.
She was always telling us afterward about the how much
stronger she felt, or where she was sore. She also
would often re-tell stories about interesting
discussions the class had engaged in while doing
crunches, or leg lifts or push-ups.
Finally, I agreed to go with her one morning.
Admittedly, I wasn't expecting it to be very hard - if
my mom was doing it, I figured I wouldn't break a
sweat. But, to my surprise and delight, Tanya kicked
my ass. I was sore all over the next morning. I told
my sister about it, and she came the next time. Since
then, we have all been devotees of Tanya and the Nu
Method. We all feel stronger, more toned and generally
in better shape when we go to class. It's great
because we feel it works the whole body in an hour. We
keep coming back not only because it is a great
workout, but because Tanya is such a pleasure to spend
a morning with. She's funny and sweet and keeps class
moving by engaging us in conversations about
everything from celebrities to politics and family.
Although often we are too winded to contribute,
listing to Tanya makes "ball-drops" slightly more
bearable.
Everyone should try the Nu Method - Tanya is so much
fun, and you will notice a difference!

FAMILY AFFAIR

When I told my husband that my girlfriend and I was starting an exercise and weight loss routine, he said “AGAIN”. I asked “What do you mean by that?” He started telling me that if you put 2 bad peas in a pot you will have 2 bad peas, but if you have 1 bad pea and up put it together with a good pea you have half a chance of the peas come out good. So I said “Are you calling me a bad pea?”
He went on explaining that if you keep hooking up with the same people and doing the same thing you will keep getting the same results. Therefore, you need to hook up with someone that has already made working out apart of their lifestyle. After I got over the fact that he just called me a bad pea, I realized he was right. (But, don’t tell him I said so.)
The next morning I took my daughter to school (this is usually my husband’s job) and ran into Tanya. (Although our children attend the same school I hardly ever see Tanya or maybe we are both so busy to notice each other.) It hit me, I need Tanya. I proceeded to tell Tanya my husband’s bad pea story and she invited me to attend her class at the Y. At that moment I had a flash back of her class a year earlier. I could not walk for 2 days. I attended 2 classes and that was it. I was nervous at the thought of feeling that pain again. (Even though I knew it was a good pain.)
The next day I went to the Y to rejoin and happened to bump into Tanya AGAIN (Was this fate or what?) and she proceeded to pull me over to her students that just completed her class. Without consulting with me she introduced me and told them that I WILL be attending the next class. I looked at her surprisingly and said I guest you are committing me to this. She looked at me and gave me a big hug and said “that is what good peas do”, and then she turned and dashed off.
It has only been 5 weeks (WOW, it seems much longer.), but I am committed. I attended her class twice a week faithfully. (Sometimes with child in tow) I love The Nu Method. I can say this now that I am home and not in the middle of Tanya’s work out. (lol) It took some getting use to, but I am glad I stuck with it and made Tanya my good pea.
Thank you Tanya for being you and committing me to becoming good pea as well.
With love,
Myra

One of major lifetime “ah ha moments” was a few weeks ago when I walked into Tanya’s Nu Method class and she said “ you are fit – now it’s just about tweaking”. Wow! My personal athletic and physical journey started out in Tanya’s Nu Method class at the Brooklyn Y two years ago. The Nu method is totally focused on exercising for yourself — it changed my entire perspective and helped me focus on exercise and athletics because of how good it makes me feel. Of course the result is a major physical change and I look pretty darn good too – but its the inside that really counts. Fueled by Tanya and the Nu Method I went from the gym a few times a week to riding an 111 mile charity bike ride last summer. And I just started running. I reached my goal of “Fit by 50” at the age of 49!

Hi. I am Sharon -- a wife, a mother of teenage twins, and an elementary school teacher.
I started the Nu Method because I wanted to become healthier and avoid some of the health problems that run in my family, such as hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In addition, I wanted to have more energy so that I could do more with my children and be better able to meet the demands of a rewarding, but challenging job.
The Nu Method has helped me to become more discipline. It has also helped me to take care of myself, by putting myself first. It took me most of my adult life to figure out this was the best thing to do for me and my family. I am more fit and stronger than I have been in years. I also have the opportunity to work out with my colleagues and have a lot of fun.

BEFORE AFTER
I first came to The NU Method classes mainly as support for my sister-in-law so she didn't have to go alone. I have been heavy all my life and believe me I have tried every diet in the book. I have wasted money on gyms and gym equipment by the fistfuls. So let's just say my expectations were low. I can honestly say that this program really achieves results. It has been just about five months and I feel the change in me. At first I noticed that my clothes were fitting a little looser. Then the real test came, I went to a party with some people who I hadn't seen in a few months and they could see the change. Just today, a woman who I ride the bus with who I haven't seen in ages came right up to me and said I looked great. That's the type of outside encouragement that keeps you going. But you don't really need outside encouragement.
Tanya Fly has developed a program that focuses on changing the areas women really need to work on: stomach, legs and arms. Strengthen and lengthen, that's what the NU Method does for muscles I never knew were inside that flab. In addition, she makes it fun. Her infectious enthusiasm inspires you to push yourself harder and do things you thought you would never do. The first time she says, "Try to do a back bend." you think "This woman is crazy...I haven't done that since I was ten," but she keeps you trying and while I haven't quite made it, I keep pushing. The NU Method is a true woman friendly program and Tanya's support and encouragement keeps it fun.

As a teacher, I spend a lot of my day helping kids learn how very important to kids it is that they read every single day. When they don't, I help them come up with a plan to make sure that it really happens, one small step at a time. Thank goodness I have my own teacher, Tanya Fly, to remind me of the importance of daily fitness for a healthy lifestyle. When I wasn't doing it anytime but with her, she slowed down and walked me through, step by step. I went to Modell's and bought cute workout clothes, and two sets of weights.
She also reminds us frequently that it's not just about "working out"...it's about seeing the opportunities in your daily life as a chance to make yourself even healthier while you have fun. She encourages us to go out dancing... and she encouraged me to go ahead and sign up to play on a women's beginner ice hockey team! I feel more energized and excited about my life. I was never a "gym going" gal, but now I feel I have really achieved a level of personal fitness that wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support and encouragement Tanya is always providing!

I love Tanya and the Nu Method. Why? Because I hate exercise. I'd rather have dental surgery. And I would avoid it at every turn. But then I found a method that gives me two things: the relief of being around other people who are like me: busy, stressed, with not a lot of time for themselves. And the knowledge that comes with learning that you can't just work on one part of your life and expect the rest to catch up. Taking care of myself is about many things - including exercise. And when you address them, and you address them with help and support, life becomes fun.

After losing 65 lbs through diet alone, I arrived at my goal weight feeling even less in shape than before. That's when I discovered The NU Method. Not only did I lose ten more pounds, I have also found that my body actually CAN do what I want it to do. I'm in better shape than in 20 years and am actually beginning to feel strong, which is a goal that I didn't even realize possible.

Tanya is a fantastic personal trainer! I'm a 20 year old college
sophomore, and I'm a guy who has always played sports and tried to keep myself in good shape. Once when I came home from college my mom asked me to go to her exercise class with her. I said yes just to keep my mom happy, expecting it to be boring and easy. Wow, was I surprised!
A workout in Tanya's class was challenging, and I have to
admit I was sore the next day. I asked for a private class so that
Tanya could help me develop a good routine to take with me when I returned to college. Tanya was totally helpful and supportive, and
worked out routines that were up to my level. I now have a
personalized, challenging exercise routine to take with me and to help keep me in shape for soccer, basketball and my own personal fitness. Tanya is able to adjust her great skills to everyone from my mom to me, and she's easy and fun to work with. I plan to go back to Tanya's class every time I return home to

The NU Method is fabulous. Tanya Fly gets you to work hard and enjoy it. The results are almost immediate. After about two months having made no other change in my life accept starting The NU Method, I could fit into the jeans I had not been able to wear since before my second pregnancy.
Now I am working on the jeans I wore before my first pregnancy! (smile)

BEFORE AFTER (WEDDING DAY)
Formerly, and I mean formerly, I was a professional long jumper until bilateral knee surgery forced me to consider early retirement. That was almost five years ago. So until now, I have gone back and forth between being really active, exercising most days of the week, to sort-of active, exercising when I could fit in but taking weeks off here and there. My saving grace though has been that I have a good base of strength and fitness left over from my competitive days.
Why does TNM work for such a diverse group of women and how do you stay challenged with the range of abilities being so vast? Honestly, a big part of the reason it works is Tanya. A really good method or exercise philosophy is only as good as its instructor. Tanya is able to make the class fun, explain things clearly, encourage you to challenge yourself and set new fitness goals and not get discouraged.
Because TNM comes from a person who understands the challenges of fitting fitness in to your busy schedule and is in no kind of denial about the obstacles that come up, kids, work, fatigue, etc that make it hard for women to carve out time for themselves, there is a flexibility about the program and a supportive community that has developed around it.

" Being an incredibly busy mom of two young children under the age of 5, I assumed the baby/mommy weight would just "fall off" from all the walking, pushing strollers, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, diaper bags, and screaming toddlers. However, I was not seeing a difference and even noticed parts of me were flabby and weak. I couldn't believe how much heavier I was than before I had kids. I finally decided I needed to be working out consistently and joined the gym. Again, I assumed for sure my body would tighten up, I'd feel stronger, and the weight would certainly fall off. After several months of treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary bikes, I still wasn't really seeing a difference. I was incredibly frustrated and almost decided to give it up since nothing was truly working. Then I decided to try Tanya's NU METHOD class, almost as a last resort.
I knew halfway into my first class that while my previous cardio workouts had been good, they were not even coming close to targeting my areas of needs. By the end of the class I knew this was what I needed to make a difference. After just a month of taking Tanya's class, I felt stronger, and noticed my problem areas tightening up and were noticeably less flabby. Most importantly, the NU METHOD teaches you how to focus on your core and to pay attention to your body to make sure you are properly working your problem areas. Also, when I work out independently, I am able to incorporate what I learn from class into my workouts. I now feel like when I go to the gym, I am truly having a good workout that is definitely targeting my problem areas, whereas before, I was just burning calories. When you have a busy lifestyle, you can't afford to waste time, especially when going to the gym. If you want to ensure that when working out that you are truly targeting your problem areas, then the NU METHOD is definitely what you need. "

After 6 weeks working with Tanya Fly, taking her NU Method class at
least twice a week, I feel good, physically and mentally. My chronic
stiff neck and aching back are gone and my clothes fit better. My
sister told me I have a happy glow (and it's not just the fake tan).
In fact, I feel MOTIVATED and I owe that solely to !) and I find that I
often don't click with people who are all about the workout. But
Tanya is different. She's intelligent and inspiring. Taking her class
has made me want to be more active and feel more positive about my
ability to do it. I used to see myself as a born-again couch potato,
post-baby, but now I think of myself as someone who Tanya.

Tanya Fly's Nu Method class is by far the best
exercise class I have ever attended. It is a tough class
and I feel I get a great work-out every time. More
importantly, Tanya is very tuned in to each member of the
class and her respective fitness level. When I first
joined her class, I was very unfit and very overweight.
Tanya never made me feel bad, but rather always
encouraged me and showed me alternate ways to do each
exercise.
Although I have a long way to go, since I
started her class about 8 months ago I have not only lost
a significant amount of weight, but I also have increased
my fitness level tremendously. I am 57 years old and
diabetic, and I can truly say that Tanya is a life-saver!
I also should mention that Tanya makes each class fun and
there is a great deal of laughter as well as hard work. I
try never to miss her classes even though I have to change
my schedule around to be there. Tanya has a well-deserved devoted following, and I know that many more people could benefit from her teaching if she offered more classes.
Tanya Fly is the best!

The Nu Method is amazing. Tanya is awesome!! At 40 years old, she has my Body doing things it's not done since my gymnastic classes in Junior High School. I feel great!!! Never before have I had anyone comment on the shape of my arms. I now have definition. The timing couldn't be more
perfect. Summer is here and sleeveless shirts, tube tops and halters are
in. I feel strong and am always eager to take her class. We have a great
time. We laugh, we talk and we work hard. Funny thing is we have such a
good time that it's difficult for me to say we work hard but the reality is
WE DO.

Tanya Fly not only teaches a great class but she provides motivation and makes you feel like family. She is tough but wonderfully soft with matters of the heart. I enjoy her spontaneity, spunk and love. I enjoy the Fly experience and recommend more people take advantage of her amazing talents. This is a conditioning class that is a class act.

Working with Tanya turned out to be much more than working out - it has been a profound experience in ways that I didn't imagine. Tanya is undoubtedly a superb trainer, with just the right degree of pushing to get results, balanced with humor and incredible energy. Her NU Method is fun, exhausting, strengthening, amazing. It made me feel like a boxer, a dancer and weightlifter all within the space of an hour. Undoubtedly, I got results in the month I gave myself to work out three times a week with her. At first I wasn't certain it was making a difference, but my clothes got looser, people told me I was glowing, and I felt my stomach, back and legs get tauter and tighter. I developed muscles in areas that I didn't know muscles existed - but long, flat muscles, not bunchy masculine ones. The ultimate compliment came as I took off my clothes to dive in a pool and had someone say to me, "Wow, you look GOOD in a swimsuit".
But I must also say that Tanya goes beyond the body and touches the mental and spiritual sides of taking care of your body. She tracks your diet, how your emotions correspond to your diet, and drums into you that every day you make choices that impact how your body looks and feels.
So, one month later, what has changed? One dress size smaller, one new view on exercise, a lot of fun and a keen desire to keep working.
